How to Wear the Athleisure Trend: 5 Style Tips From a Woman Who’s Worn It All Her Life

How to wear the athleisure trend: 5 style tips and ideas
The first time I heard about the athleisure trend, my immediate thought was, “Really?! Wearing sweatpants and t-shirts is a thing now?” I’m sure women everywhere who considered themselves tomboys or grew up playing sports were probably thinking the same thing.

The athleisure trend has been around for a couple years, but in my world it has been and will be around forever. Now I can go around wearing my everyday uniform with this idea in my head that I’m being “trendy”. Wearing sweatpants and t-shirts all day is one thing. However, making that outfit look stylish is another thing altogether. Here are a few style tips so that you can look effortlessly chic.

1. Wear loose sweats with fitted tops or jackets

Many of the sweat pants we see nowadays are more slim fitting, but if you’re going to wear baggy sweats, make sure you balance the look with a more fitted top or jacket. That way the outfit doesn’t make you look frumpy.

2. Mix timeless, classic pieces with updated styles

Pair trendy-looking pieces with everyday items to create a more relevant look. For example, you could wear slim sweatpants in a fun, bright color with a t-shirt and a classic fleece jacket like this one from a brand called Lapasa. If you’re not familiar with Lapasa, it is a sportswear brand that offers a whole collection of fleece items including hoodies, jogging pants, and thermals for both women and men. They also offer sports bras, jackets, leggings, and even shapewear from women.

This is the type of jacket that could go with just about everything. I like a jacket like this because I live in San Diego where the weather is sometimes unpredictable. I always carry around a light sweater or jacket just in case. If you’re looking for this style of fleece jacket, Lapasa is offering 5% off this product with promo code “BEAUTY12” at checkout. Click here to shop. (Offer ends 1/31/18) This particular jacket features stretch micro fleece that is supposed to shed moisture and can be layered under a heavier jacket and/or over another top.

3. Accessories add instant style

Long-time readers know that I’m very much into accessories and how they can make or break an outfit. If you’re wearing a simple casual outfit, you can take it to the next level with stylish fashion accessories. Even if you’re just wearing a simple pair of leggings with a top, you can dress it up with a nice pair of eye-catching earrings. A nice quality leather purse can also take an otherwise ho-hum outfit to an understated chic look.

4. Shoes make your athleisure outfit unique

Just like fashion accessories, shoes can add a whole new dimension to your outfits. One key look that has stuck out for me is slim sweatpants with heels or sandals. I still have yet to try this out myself (I rarely wear heels anymore), but one of these days I will. I’m more of a sneakerhead, so I love shoes from Adidas or Puma. (Although I’ve been living in my Converse for the past few months.) I also love to wear athletic shoes with dresses and skirts.

5. Opt for leggings in a fun graphic or design

I don’t know about you, but I’m all about comfort and probably own about ten pairs of leggings. Leggings will always be “in” to me. Instead of plain black leggings with a top, though, why not go for a pair in a bright color or fun graphics? You can find leggings in all types of colors and designs nowadays.

What do you think about the athleisure trend? Do you have any style tips to add?
