As women we put a great deal of effort into our outfits…and why not? Who doesn’t want to look their best and show off their unique style?
I have always been fascinated with the styles from the Victorian era when women wore tight corsets to make their waistlines small. Did you know that some of those corsets contained whalebone or wood that was sewn into a casing in the corset? I can’t even deal with a piece of wire in my bra. Imagine wearing a stiff corset with a piece of bone or wood in it?!?
Fortunately, now we have much better fabrics to make undergarments with, plus shapewear comes in all types of styles and designs depending on the look you’re trying to achieve. Besides that, shapewear is not just for cinching your waist. There are many uses for it including body support during pregnancy, working out, or after surgery.
I had the opportunity to try out a product from All About Shapewear, a company that offers a wide range of shapewear including full body suits, waist trainers, bras and even butt lifters – something I could use a little help with!
I chose the panty style BodyShaper to wear with the bodycon dresses I haven’t worn in awhile because – to be honest – I just didn’t feel completely confident with my little “belly pooch”. I know as much as I promote this idea of being confident in your natural body and loving your body, even I have my little insecurities (something I’ll have to talk about in a future post).
All About Shapewear products are made in Columbia, which is why you’ll notice on their website that they refer to their products as “Fajas Colombianas”. The body shaper I tried is made of 80% polyamide and 20% elastane on the outer, plus 93% cotton and 7% elastane for the lining.
If you’re not sure about your size, there is a sizing chart available on their website to help you choose. I wasn’t completely positive about my size, so they sent me a small and medium along with prepaid postage to send back the one that didn’t fit. Based on other reviews on All About Shapewear’s website, you probably want to go up 1-2 sizes from what you normally wear. If you’ve never worn shapewear before, it does take some getting used to. I actually have another piece of shapewear that I wear once in awhile.
I started to try on the medium and thought for sure that it was too snug. I typically wear a small/medium in tops and a size medium or 5/7 in pants. It does help that this body shaper has a snap and zipper closure, making it easy to slip into and out of. Once I completely had the body shaper on, though, I realized it was perfect for me. I took a few deep breaths just to make sure I could breathe comfortably. There are snaps on the bottom so you don’t have to worry about taking off the full bodysuit when using the bathroom.
The body shaper has a great deal of compression on the waistline, plus it has high back coverage. Surprisingly, I was still comfortable while sitting down. For some reason I thought I was going to have a hard time breathing. It even helped with my posture because it forces you to sit up straighter. No wonder all those Victorian women looked like they had such great posture! I wore the shaper for only a few hours at a time and I only really plan to wear it if I’m attending an event – especially if it’s an event where there’s a ton of food because it definitely prevents you from overeating!
It’s better if you wear a strapless bra with this product, but I actually went braless and still had enough support because it wraps around the whole torso and sits right under the breasts. However, I have smaller breasts and don’t need a ton of support.
For me, the body shaper basically smooths out my curves and gives me more of an hourglass shape while tucking in my pooch.
But can it flatten my abs?
I’m sure many of you have been wondering whether or not shapewear can help flatten your abs and actually make your waist smaller. I haven’t tried out this body shaper long enough to tell you from my experience. There has been a great deal of debate among experts regarding the science of shapewear. I think we can all agree, though, that if worn the right way, shapewear can enhance your shape and give you just a tad bit more confidence in the way you look. I’ll also add that you still need to put in the work and exercise to actually lose or maintain your weight. You can’t expect to eat junk food all the time and then use a shapewear product to keep your belly flat!
All in all I’m happy with All About Shapewear’s body shaper and the service I received. The product is made of high quality materials and I like that they offer a variety of different products.
