My Love/Hate Relationship With Engagement Rings

As Valentine’s Day approaches, there will be many men planning romantic evenings with the women they love. Some will even be shopping for engagement rings, mustering up the courage to take that next important step in their lives.

I have to admit that I have a love/hate relationship with diamonds and engagement rings. On the one hand diamonds represent such beauty and clarity. Just like all gemstones, they were put on this earth for us to enjoy and appreciate. Then someone decided to add even more value to diamonds and people began acting like crazy lunatics to find the most beautiful of them all. It’s sad that people will kill for diamonds, but then there are people who will kill for a pair of shoes too.

What annoys me, though, is that many of us have an obsession with celebrities and their engagement rings. Why is that? Many celebrities end up getting divorced anyway and then the rings are long forgotten. Perhaps it’s because we want to live vicariously through celebrities, although many of us probably wouldn’t wear such a huge diamond on a daily basis.

When my fiance presented me with a promise ring a few years ago, I was so excited. The diamond was teeny-tiny by American standards, but it didn’t matter to me because it was a symbol of his commitment to our relationship. It was a gift of love… Of course, if he had given me a multi-karat diamond ring, I would have gratefully accepted it as well 🙂 However, that’s not to say that a ring is the only way to declare your love for someone. Sometimes gazing into their eyes with a heartfelt sincere “I love you” will suffice.

Being the practical person that I am, I would much rather have a small engagement ring and a long-lasting, loving marriage than a huge ring with a tumultuous relationship. However, that won’t stop me from oohing and ahhing over engagement rings with big diamonds because they are beautiful after all. I can still appreciate the work and artistry that was put into making them…
