November is “National Healthy Skin Month”, so I want to pass on these skin care tips from Thomas E. Rohrer, MD, FAAD, a board-certified dermatologist in private practice in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts:
• Use a gentle, non-abrasive cleanser that does not contain alcohol.
• Wet your face with lukewarm water and use your fingertips to apply cleanser. Using a washcloth, mesh sponge or anything other than your fingertips can irritate your skin.
• Resist the temptation to scrub your skin as scrubbing irritates the skin. Rinse with lukewarm water, and pat dry with a soft towel.
• Apply moisturizer if your skin is dry or itchy. Be gentle when applying any cream around your eyes so you do not pull too hard on this delicate skin.
• Limit washing to twice a day and after sweating. Wash your face once in the morning and once at night as well as after sweating heavily. Perspiration, especially when wearing a hat or helmet, irritates the skin. Wash your skin as soon as possible after sweating.

One of my biggest frustrations is that I’m in my 30’s and I still get pimples and blemishes. As much as I would like to be young again, this part of being young I could do without. I mainly get pimples around my chin area when I cup my head in my hand as I’m thinking and writing, so I have to be more mindful of that. The combination of sweaty hands and oily face makes for a great environment for pimples to grow…
My friend’s teenage daughter is going through a rough time with pimples and blemishes. I understand how it can affect your self-esteem. I went through the same thing when I was in junior high. However, what I understand now is that stressing over it doesn’t make it better. In fact, the combination of stress and focusing all your energy on the problem can make it worse.
So if you’re looking for ways to get rid of pimples and blemishes, here are 3 of my own personal cures…

1. Get some vitamin D – Vitamin D improves your skin metabolism and promotes the regeneration and growth of skin cells. You can take a vitamin supplement or simply sit in the sun for 10-15 minutes to soak up up some rays on your face.
2. Try a blemishing balm cream, aka BB-cream product, and apply it solely to the areas that need help.
3. Toothpaste – To zap away a pimple overnight, apply a dab of toothpaste on it and let it marinate. In the morning that zit should be gone if not close!
